Sample Question 5

Junior Cycle – Mathematics  – Financial Maths

Question: A transition year mini company produces small cakes at a cost of €1.20 each and sells them for €2.50. Calculate the profit that the mini company will make if they sell 50 cakes during a bake sale.

Answers:

A.  €60

B.  €65

C.  €125

D.  €50

Correct Answer B:  €65

Explanation: To calculate the profit made on each cake, we subtract the cost to make each cake €1.20 from the price each cake is sold for €2.50. Therefore, €2.50 (sale price) – €1.20 (cost price) = €1.30 (profit per cake). Then, to calculate the total profit made by the mini company, we simply multiply the total number of cakes sold (50 cakes) by the profit per cake (€1.30). This gives us 50 x €1.30 = €65 Profit.
